Melissani Cave and Lake in Sami Kefalonia

Melissani cave, also referred to as Cave of the Nymphs as it used to be a place of worship dedicated to the god Pan, also comprises Melissani lake, setting the stage for a mesmerizing experience. Curiously, the lake is a mixture of seawater and freshwater though it is about 500 m from the sea. Most impressive however, is the unique effect created by the rays of sunlight that pierce through an oval opening in the cave’s ceiling, lending an exquisite blue color to the waters below. In order to capture the full effect of this show of lights, it is best to visit at midday, when the sun is directly above the cave.
